Security to MPs: Patil to discuss with states

New Delhi, Mar 9 (UNI) Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil will discuss with the state governments, affected by naxalite and Maoist menace, the provision of security to the Members of Parliament as demanded by them, Parliamentary Affairs Minister P R Dasmunsi said.

Briefing mediapersons here, Mr Patil said he discussed the matter with Speaker Somnath Chatterjee in a bid to impress upon him the need for providing security to the MPs.

There was no provision as such for the Centre to provide security to the MPs while they were in the affected states, he added.

Mr Dasmunsi refused to reveal the names of the members who had demanded security but said that the MPs from Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh feared a threat to their life from naxals and Maoists.

The states could depute the staff in the Central forces deployed in their state to provide security to them. In case the forces were inadequate, they could inform the Centre about it.

Replying to a question on Meghalaya Chief Minister J D Rymbai refusing to quit despite directions from Congress President Sonia Gandhi, the Congress leader said there had been a tradition of forming and toppling of governments. The only thing to be decided was which Congress leader would become the Chief Minister.

Mr Dasmunsi deplored the police action on the Congress' rally in Ahmedabad, where scheduled castes had demanded filling up of SC reservation quota Asked about discussion in Parliament on Bofors pay-off accused Ottavio Quattrocchi, he said no date had been fixed so far. As and when the matter progresses, time would be fixed by the Business Advisory Committee, he said.
