Postal dept to deploy aircraft for service in NE

Shillong, Mar 9: The Department of Posts has proposed to hire an aircraft on lease basis to fly letters, parcels and cargo in the landlocked North Eastern states, official sources said here today.

The department has been facing problem in carrying out dispatches in the region in the absence of a reliable rail/air network.

Therefore, it has proposed to have an aircraft on lease from Indian Airlines for disptaching mails, they said.

In addition to an initial one-time expenditure of Rs. 12 crore, approximately Rs. 36 crore will be incurred on this account per year, an initial estimation said.

It is expected that the quick service and increased mails could generate additional revenue to the department.
