Kashmiri poet Raahi chosen for Jnanpeeth Award
New Delhi, Mar 9 (UNI) Eminent Kashmiri poet and critic Rehman Raahi has been selected for the prestigious Jnanpeeth Award for his enormous contribution to Indian literature.
Jnanpeeth Award Selection Committee convener Ravindra Kalia told UNI that the committee, presided over by Dr L M Singhvi, selected Mr Raahi for the 40th Award for the year 2004-05.
This is the most prestigious award in the field of literature in India and comprises Rs 5 lakh, a citation and a statuette of Vagdevi, the goddess of learning.
Mr Raahi, the fist Kahmiri writer to get this award, had earlier won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1961.
