Intrusion of rowdies should be checked: CPI

Puducherry, Mar 9 (UNI) The Puducherry unit of the Communist Party of India (CPI) today called for a mechanism to monitor and check the intrusion of rowdies and other anti-social elements into the Union Territory from other states.

Talking to newspersons here, CPI State Secretary Na Ra Kalainathan said the law and order situation in Puducherry was causing concern, following the influx of history sheeters and criminals from other states. Even though, the number of police officals had been enhanced from time to time, the strength of the constables remained the same and this should be addressed immediately, he added.

To bring the law and order situation on track, monitoring by flying squads should be enhanced and meetings to create awareness among the public should be conducted, he said, adding that the welfare of police constables who were forced to work 24 hours should also be considered.

On the suicide of a prisoner in the central prison here recently, Mr Kalainathan said the government had constituted several enquiry commissions. However, the report of not even a single commission was released and if the government had released the report, remedial measures could have been taken to prevent such incidents in the future.

Mr Kalainathan said the party would organise a public meeting here tomorrow to condemn the price rise of essential commodities, as part of the its nationwide campaign. Kerala Minister for Forest and Housing Binoy Viswam and Tiruppur MP K Subbarayan would address the meeting, he added.

On March 12, the party would organise a demonstration in Mahe region and a meeting in Karaikal region on March 15 for the same cause.

He said the party would release a draft Budget in tomorrow's public meeting and it would be submitted to the government and also to the parties supporting the government here.
