Guj Govt to form SPG to fight terrorism in state

Gandhinagar, Mar 9 (UNI) Concerned with the growing menace of terrorism, Gujarat Government today announced the formation of a Special Protection Group (SPG) to curb terrorist activities.

Gujarat Home Minister Amit Shah told the legislative Assembly the SPG will be a separate entity and will specifically work to prevent and curb terrorism in the state, bordering Pakistan.

Mr Shah made the announcement while replying to a written question by ruling BJP MLA Kantibhai Lakum during Question hour.

Mr Shah said though the SPG has been given a separate entity status it would work in tandem with Anti-Terrorist Squad of Gujarat and State Crime Branch department to put up coordinated and strong efforts to prevent terrorist activities.

The Minister said the Home Department has decided to appoint as many as 659 officers of various ranks in the SPG. The formation of SPG was necessitated with the rise in infiltration of terrorists and smuggling of arms and RDX through sea and land route in the state and other parts of the country.

He said special training is being given to crime branch officers to solve cyber crimes and a special CID Crime Cyber cell has also been formed.

Besides, a special course has also been started in Gujarat Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) to give specific training to the police officials of the state.

In reply to another supplementary question, Mr Shah informed the House that in last four years only one civilian and as many as 16 terrorists were killed. However, Not a single policeman died in the terrorist activities he claimed.
