Shillong, Mar 8, (UNI) The Meghalaya government has instituted a magisterial inquiry into the recent killing of 16-year-old Mithun Marak by BSF personnel on March 3 in the state's Ryngku village bordering Bangladesh.

DIG BSF N S Sajjan here today said the boy was shot dead by the jawans while he was 'smuggling' bundles of bamboo to Bangladesh.

The BSF also claimed that some of the smugglers had escaped to Bangladesh.

On the other hand, the Garo Students' Union (GSU) said the incident took place when two BSF personnel misbehaved with two girls in the village.

GSU president Khasi Hills Zone Aldo A Sangma claimed the boy was shot at point blank range by the BSF personnel mainly because he witnessed their 'nefarious' attempts.

The GSU also demanded that the state government punish the BSF personnel who were involved in the incident.

Meanwhile, the district administration has called eyewitnessess to appear personally or file affidavits on March 20 at the Deputy Commissioner's office here.
