Man held for killing son-in-law for dowry
Vadodara, Mar 8 (UNI) A tribesman killed his son-in-law after the latter allegedly failed to make full payment of Rs 45,000 as dowry, a custom still prevalent in some tribal communities in Gujarat.
Three years ago, 35-year-old Galia Nayak of Rangpur village under Chhotaudepur taluka had married accused Moji Rathwa's daughter with a promise to pay him Rs 45,000 in cash as dowry.
According to Rangpur police sources, Galia, who was working as a labour, was brutally killed on Monday by his father-in-law Moji and three other villagers of Ukhawat as he failed to pay the outstanding dues of Rs 12,000.
On the fateful night, the accused reportedly dragged Galia out of his Rangpur house and tied him to a tree before hacking him to death.
Police, who had launched a manhunt to nab the killers, arrested Moji and two of his accomplices - Nathudia Rathwa and Baba Rathwa, following raids on their hideouts yesterday. The fourth accused identified as Gordhan Rathwa is absconding, sources said.
