Dikshit calls on women to empower themselves

New Delhi, Mar 8 (UNI) Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today exhorted women to empower themselves economically and socially to become independent decision-makers.

''Gender related inequality exists, particularly in rural areas.... the situation can improve only if women become independent decision-makers,'' Ms Dikshit said in her address at the International Women's Day Function organised by the Delhi Commission for Women.

Stressing on educating women, she said they can claim their rights, instead of just accepting what is given to them, only if they are aware.

''Women must gain economic and social status through empowerment, such empowered women can then create awareness and be role models to other women,'' she added.

The Chief Minister said the strength of the Indian women lies in her tolerance.

''Indian women are known for their strength, affection and tolerance.... The strength of Indian women lies in the fact that she does what she says,'' she observed.

Ms Dikshit gave away Godfrey Philips Bravery Award to social worker Sushila, for her tremendous contribution in the field of women awareness and women empowerment.

The award carries a cash prize of Rs 21,000 and a citation.

The celebrations were attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's wife Ms Gursharan Kaur, Union Minister for State for Women and Child Welfare Renuka Chaudhary, Chairperson of Delhi Commission for Women Kiran Walia and actor Preity Zinta among others.
