Ban on carrying firearms in Delhi till April 9

New Delhi, Mar 8 (UNI) In view of the upcoming polls to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on April 5, the carrying of firearms, swords and other weapons has been banned in the capital till April 9.

According to an order issued by Delhi Police Commissioner K K Paul, carrying of firearms (including licensed firearms), cudgels, swords, spears, bludgeons, knives, sticks or 'lathis' in any public place within the Union Territory of Delhi has been banned with immediate effect till April 9.

However, any person professing, believing or following Sikh faith may carry or possess with him a 'Kirpan' (of the prescribed type).

Any person contravening this order will be punishable under Clause (a) of Sub Section (2) of section 113 of the Delhi Police Act, 1978 which provides punishment or imprisonment for a term upto one year with likelihood of imposition of a fine.

Also, in view of the above order, licensees have been directed not to bring weapons for inspection to the licensing branch, at the time of renewal of their licenses, till the election process is over.
