New Delhi, Mar 7 (UNI) Word is awaited from a dozen large States about steps to catch up on technical education facilities in which they lag behind the national average, Parliament was told today.

Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh has asked the Chief Ministers of those States to initiate urgent action to come up on par with the national average, the Lok Sabha was told in a written reply.

Minister of State for Human Resource Development D Purandeswari said the average intake capacity per lakh people in technical courses is 68 at degree level and 31 at diploma level.

She said data kept by the All India Council for Technical Education showed that 16 States-- Bihar, Assam, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Manipur, Tripura, Himachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir-- lag behind the average in diploma enrolment and 18 States-- Nagaland, Mizoram, Bihar, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Tripura, Jharkhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, West Bengal Himachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Orissa, and Madhya Pradesh-- lag behind in degree enrolment.

Corrective steps suggested include new institutions in backward areas, greater intake in institutions, opening new branches and courses in emerging areas, giving incentives for bona-fide non-government quality institutions and strengthening infrastructure and faculty, she said.

She said the exact steps being taken or proposed to be taken by these States have not yet been received by the Central government from these States.
