Minister confirms MCI's decision on Govt Medical College

Hyderabad, Mar 7 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Minister for Medical and Health K Rosaiah today informed the Assembly that the Medical Council of India (MCI) had conveyed its decision not to approve the Government Medical college at Anantapur to award MBBS degree as granted by the NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada.

Replying to a question by S Sailajanath and Challa Rama Krishna Reddy (Cong), the Minister said the MCI had conducted an inspection of the college in November 2006 and found that the college lacked infrastructure and staff.

Mr Rosaiah said in order to fill the vacancies, the government had conducted recruitment of Assistant Professors in September 2006 and another notification would be issued shortly to fill up the vacancies.

He said the UGC pay scale was implemented and retired professors were appointed, by providing a honorarium of Rs 40,000 in addition to their pension.

The post graduate students, who had completed their course, were being posted at the College.

He said the government would soon complete the construction of the quarters for both the teaching and non-teaching staff.
