Elders voice concern over jute workers' plight in West Bengal

New Delhi, Mar 7 (UNI) Cutting across party lines, Members in the Rajya Sabha today expressed concern on the ongoing agitation by jute workers in West Bengal and demanded immediate central intervention to mitigate their sufferings.

Mr Moin-ul-Hasan and Mr Abani Roy (both CPM), Mr Rudranarayan Pani (BJP) and Mr Amar Singh (Samajwadi Party) demanded intervention by the Central Government against jute mill owners pointing out that lakhs of jute mill workers were not being paid their dues.

They said the agitation had been going on for the last two months and there seemed to be no end to the workers' plight.

While Mr Pani demanded that the Ministries of Textile, Labour and Commerce and Industry unitedly devise ways to mitigate the sufferings of the jute workers, Mr Amar Singh said the government should be more concerned about their welfare.
