Tripura PDS captures 3rd position in the nation

Agartala, Mar 6 (UNI) Tripura has captured the third and top position in the country and NE region respectively in the field of Public Distribution System (PDS) through ration shops.

In neighbouring Asom, Mizoram and Meghalaya there is no PDS and the respective governments have given the responsiblity to the agencies, state Food Minister Gopal Das claimed.

The Food and Civil Supply Department Director Samarjit Bhowmik, who participated in a training programme on the ration shop-based Vigilence Committee recently, said that Tripura has captured the third position in the PDS field in entire country, as per a report of Union Government.

Mr Singh said that the Comptroller and Auditor General of India had mentioned in its report that all kind of goods allotted for PDS in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and the Northeast have been going directly to open market.

However, the report did not say that food in Tripura was going to the open market, which is a matter of pride for the state, the Director commented.

The food minister also said that in all 2,51,000 families had been benefitted, following the introduction of Antodaya and Anna Yojna schemes from 2004-05 to 2006-07 and 44,553 families were benefited by Annapurna schemes in the state during the same period,he stated.
