TNEB contract employees stage demo to press demand

Chennai, Mar 6 (UNI) A large number of contract employees of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) and members of the CITU affiliated Central Organisation today staged a slogan shouting demonstration in front of the TNEB's office here, demanding immediate regularisation of all contract employees.

Organisation president S Pancharathnam, who led the demonstration said if the Government failed to concede their demands, they would intensify their stir.

Organisation general secretary S S Subramanian, in a press release said about 23,100 contract employees were working in the TNEB for the past 20 to 25 years and the government had also recognised them as contract employees.

Despite relentless struggle for regularisation, the TNEB and the state government had not fulfilled their just and reasonable demand, he said adding instead of regularising them at one go, the Government had recently announced that the employees would be regularised in a phased manner.

In order to avoid further delay and confusion, the organisation demanded that all the contract employees should be regularised at a single stroke, he added.

With nearly 23,400 vacant helpers post in the TNEB and currently serving 1.83 crore consumers besides an addition of at least eight lakh consumers every year, it was high time that the government regularise the contract employees to ensure better service to the consumers, he added.
