Demo against attack on fishermen by SL Navy
Chennai, Mar 6: Members of the Dalit Panthers of India (DPI) led by party general secretary Thol Thirumvalavan today staged a noisy demonstration here, condeming the continuing attack on Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy personnel.
Addressing the protestors, Mr Thirumavalavan, strongly condemning the planned attack on the fishermen by the Lankan Navy, urged the Union Government to ensure that such assaults against innocent fishermen were stopped immediately.
The demonstrators urged the Centre to take necessary steps for the retrieval of Kachateevu island to protect the interests of fishermen.
Hailing the sentiments expressed by DMK president and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on the attack issue, the DPI leader requested Mr Karunanidhi to use his good office with the Union Government to put an end to such violent attacks and ensure protection to the fishermen.
DPI joint general secretary Selva Perunthagai, MLA, Ravi Kumar, MLA and representatives of various fishermen organisations, among others, participated in the stir.
Meanwhile, the police foiled an attempt by DPI volunteers to burn in effigy Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse.
