Lucknow, Mar 6 (UNI) Communist Party of India (Marxist) today clarified that despite deciding on the alliance with the Mulayam Singh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh assembly poll, it would keep its options open to support ''other secular parties'' in some pockets.

CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat held a meeting of the party's state executive here to chalk out the strategy of pre-poll alliance and other issues related to the assembly poll.

Mr Karat told mediapersons here the party had decided to ally with Mr Yadav in the UP poll and the number of seats to be contested by the CPI(M) would be decided after discussing with SP leaders.

''The party is also of the opinion to supporting other 'secular' parties in certain pockets where SP is weak,'' he added.

The CPI(M) general secretary maintained the party's main effort will be to strengthen the forces against BJP in UP.

Although Mr Karat did not react if the party will support Congress or Jan Morcha in the election, he commented ''we will decide on seat-to-seat basis.'' Meanwhile, CPI(M) has identified 14 assembly seats to be contested in alliance with SP. In the 2002 assembly poll, CPI(M) constested six seats in alliance with SP and had won two of them.
