Sonia to hoist flag on women's empowerment tomorrow

New Delhi, Mar 5 (UNI) UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi would hoist a flag designed on women's empowerment tomorrow as part of a weeklong celebration called 'Ananya (the incomparable) which began today with a film festival on the fair sex.

Giving details of the week long celeberations organised to mark the International Women's Day on March 8, Minister of State for Women and Child Development Renuka Chowdhury said stamps symbolising empowerment of women would be released, subsidised health care check ups would be organised for them.

The theme for the Ministry is 'Survival to Success celebrate her life', Ms Chowdhury said special announcements would be made in all the flights and Shatabdi and Rajdhani trains regarding this on March 8. The foundation stone of a hostel with 520 seat capacity for working women from the North East would also be laid at Jasola.

For the first time the government has translated the Public Private Partnership into an Action Plan and has taken cooperation from various agencies like the Central Social Welfare Board, UNICEF, UNIFEM, Apollo Hospitals, Indian Airlines and Railways to celebrate the Women's day, she said. The PPP would be used to draw the collective gaze towards the plight of women across the country.

Ms Sonia Gandhi would launch a flag specially designed on women's empowerment at the National Stadium tomorrow and this symbol of women's empowerment would be hoisted by all women panchayat members throughout thecountry on March 8, she said. They would pledge to fight female foeticide, infanticide, malnutrition and work for empowerment, education and employment of women, she added. Songs highlighting the problems of foeticide, infanticide and calling for women's education and empowerment would also be sung.
