Bengal Govt seeks legal opinion on HC order

Kolkata, Mar 5(UNI) The West Bengal Government was taking legal opinions on the Calcutta High Court verdict that sentenced three senior officials including Director General of Police Anup Bhushan Vora to imprisonment for contempt of court.

''We have received the court order. We are taking legal opinions before moving the Supreme Court, but nothing has been finalised so far,'' Home Secretary Prasad Ranjan Ray told reporters.

Mr Ray said the Director General of Police, who was one of the officials to have been awarded simple imprisonment of six months for contempt of the court, had gone on leave on ''personal ground''.

On March 2, a division bench of the court had awarded the sentence to the DG besides the Jalpaiguri District Magistrate and the Superintendent of Police for their failure to comply with the court's earlier order to contain an agitation demanding a Circuit Bench in Jalpaiguri.

The court had earlier taken up the issue suo moto and ordered the police and district administration to take necessary steps so that the circuit bench could be set up.

The court, however, stayed implementation of the order for three months, allowing the officials to appeal before the Supreme Court.
