NMC Mayor, Deputy Mayor to be elected tomorrow

Nagpur, Mar 4 (UNI) The election to the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor in Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is to be held here tomorrow.

A total of five candidates are in the fray for the Mayoral post, while six for that of Deputy Mayor.

The five candidates in the fray for Mayoral post include three of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and one each of the Congress and the Republican Party of India (RPI).

The six candidates who have filed their nominations for the post of Deputy Mayor include three of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and one each of the Congress, the Shiv Sena and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).

The post of Mayor in NMC is reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST), while that of his deputy is open in Nagpur.

Meanwhile, the BJP formally registered a separate political front in the general body of NMC with the office of the Divisional Commissioner here yesterday.

BJP city unit President Sudhakar Deshmukh told UNI that the party had submitted letters of support from 71 councillors in the House.

These included 55 of the BJP, 8 of the Shiv Sena, 3 of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and 5 independents, he said.

On the other hand, the Congress and NCP have founded the Secular Democratic Front (SDF) with the like-minded parties. NCP leader and Rajya Sabha member Datta Meghe has been made its chairman.

The party-wise strength in the general body of NMC is as such BJP 55, Shiv Sena 8, Congress 33, NCP 8, BSP 5, RJD 3, MNS 2, Independents 10 and others 11. The present strength of the House is 135, with one vacancy, as the election to one ward in the February 1 civic polls was countermanded after the death of the NCP candidate there.
