New Delhi, Mar 3: A Parliamentary Committee has asked the Ministry of Human Resource Development to cut short the delay in disbursal of scholarships to non-Hindi speaking students for post-matric studies in the language.

''Considerable time is being taken in the disbursal of scholarships which defeats the very purpose for which the scheme has been formulated,'' said the Department-Realted Parliamentary Standing Committee on Human Resource Development in its 187th report tabled in Parliament.

It noted that out of 1325 girl students found eligible under the Indira Gandhi Post Graduate Scholarship for single girl child two years back, 707 students were yet to benfit.

Similarly under the Post-Graduate Scholarship for University Rank Holders at the under-graduate level, process of making payment to 84 scholars was still incomplete.

It asked the Ministry to take immediate steps for removal of bottlenecks in the implementation of the scheme so that deserving candidates could benefit timely.

Under the scheme for Single Girl child introduced by the University Grants Commission in 2005, each girl receives Rs 2000 per year.

The UGC had identified 166 scholars in the 2005-06 academic year for post graduate scholarship for university rank holders.
