Lucknow, Mar 3 (UNI) Gujhiya, the staple culinary delight of Holi, has turned 'golden' this festive season, far from its humble origins.

Upmarket sweetshops and eateries here are selling these 'golden gujhiyas' for Rs 4,000 per kg under different names such as 'Swarna Gujhiya' and 'Pistachio Pride'.

Prepared using premium quality key ingredients, including flour, dry fruits, desi ghee, sugar and khoya, the final product is wrapped with pure food-grade 'swarna varq' (gold foil) to give it a'golden touch'.

Understandably so, the rich and the connoisseurs of food are simply lapping up the new offering.

'Classic Restaurant' Managing Director Ved Prakash Gupta told UNI that 'Swarna Gujhiya' was prepared keeping in mind the refined tastes of select people.

''There is a section of buyers who are on the lookout for new things in life. 'Swarna Gujhiya' fits the bill for them, besides giving a taste, that lingers on,'' he said.

Buyers also have the option of choosing a suitable packaging of these avant-garde gujhiyas, which can range from a glossy cardboard box to a classy oxidised metal case, which is charged extra up to Rs 250.

Another prominent sweetshop 'Chappan Bhog' in Sadar market is selling a similar product under the name of 'Pistachio Pride'.

Business partner Ravindra Gupta said this was the first time they were selling the premium product, which has already created its niche clientele.

''On an average, 35-40 pieces comprise a kg of 'Pistachio Pride','' he informed.
