BJP demands fresh reservation of seats for MCD polls

New Delhi, Mar 3 (UNI) The Delhi BJP today demanded that seats in reserved categories in the 272-member MCD House be notified afresh immediately so that the MCD elections are held on time.

In a letter written to Delhi Election Commissioner S P Marwah, BJP Delhi Pradesh President Harsh Vardhan demanded that after reserving afresh the seats notified for the reserve category in the MCD elections under a fool proof formula, he should notify it immediately so that the MCD elections may be held on time and there is no discrimination and favouritism with any area of class or persons.

Minto Road Councillor Ramesh Dutta had filed a petition in the Delhi High Court objecting to the formula fixed for the reserved seats for Schedule Caste, S C (Women) and Women (General) out of the total 272 notified seats under the new delimitation by the Election Commission of Delhi.

After hearing this petition, the Court reserved its judgement till March 5 and directed the Election Commission to file a fool proof formula by 1430 Hours on Monday otherwise the Court will pronounce its judgement.

Dr Harsh Vardhan said that due to this petition there is an atmosphere of uncertainty among the voters, political parties, candidates and all the other people connected with election on whether elections would be held on time.

''The political parties have made all the preparations to participate in the elections. The party machinery, workers have been deputed for preparations of the election and the process of selecting the possible candidates is on. If the elections are postponed in this situation then it will not be in the public interest, in the interest of the constitution and democracy,''Dr Harsh Vardhan said.
