Senior police officials and DM sentenced for contempt of court

Kolkata, Mar 2 (UNI) Calcutta High Court today sentenced senior police officials, a district magistrate and 14 agitators to six month simple imprisonment for contempt of court related to a High Court Circuit Bench in Jalpaiguri.

A two-judge Bench, headed by Acting Chief Justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya, issued the ruling for failure of the police and district administration to comply with the court's earlier order asking to contain the ongoing agitation regarding the Circuit Bench.

The court earlier took UP the issue suo motu and ordered the police and district administration to take necessary steps so that the Circuit Bench could be set up in Jalpaiguri.

The Bench ruled that the Director General (DG) of Police, Superintendent of Police IC, District Magistrate and 14 activists, who lead the agitation against the High Court Circuit Bench, were sentenced to six months imprisonment and fined Rs 2,000 each for not complying with the court order.

The court, however, stayed the implementation of the order for three months, allowing the people to appeal before the High Court.
