Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 2 (UNI) Kerala today decided to appeal in the Supreme Court against the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal verdict.

The government had asked an eight-member expert committee, with the Irrigation Chief Engineer as it convenor, to submit a detailed report within ten days, Kerala Water Resources Minister N K Premachandran told reporters here.

He said the decision was taken after a top level meeting of Irrigation and Electricity officials.

Before taking the decision, it would be discussed with Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan and legal experts about the kind of petition to be filed in the apex court, he said.

Mr Premachandran said the meeting noted that the Tribunal verdict had adversely affected the state.

The Cauvery Tribunal verdict had not considered the state's demand for getting its due share of water to the Kuttiyadi project and Mananthavadi project, he said, adding that not even 30 per cent of the state's requirement was considered by the tribunal.

After a long wait of 16 years, the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal recently pronounced its verdict, giving 419 thousand million cubic (TMC) feet of water to Tamil Nadu and 270 tmc ft to Karnataka.

However, the state would get only 30 TMC ft of water, which was insufficient, he added.
