unnatural deaths of two women in Kashmir

Srinagar, Mar 1 (UNI) A woman committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance while body of another woman was recovered in the Kashmir valley today, a police spokesman said.

He said Police Station Ganderbal recovered body of one Parveena Akther, daughter of Din Mohammad Khatana, resident of Darsum Manigam.

Hajra, wife of Saif-ud-Din, a resident of Ladhu Kalarooch consumed some poisonous substance last night. She was admitted to SMHS hospital where she died.

Official sources said that at an average of two to three persons are attempting to commit suicide in the Kashmir valley daily because of family disputes and other stress.

More than 30 security personnel, including some officers, had also committed suicide in the Kashmir valley because of mental stress and family problems.

Alarmed over the suicide incidents by the security forces, authorities of different security agencies had recently introduced Yoga and Art of living classes for their men to help them cope with out of the stress.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a report from the Jammu and Kashmir government after taking cognisance of news reports on the large number of suicide deaths and cases of suicide attempts in the Kashmir valley.

The Commission, in a communication in May last year, directed the state government to furnish details of the number of suicide deaths and attempted suicides in the valley from 1999 to 2000 and 2003 to 2004.

The commission has further said if investigations establish that the suicides were linked to militancy in the state, it ought to be mentioned in the report.
