Subramanian re-elected Mayor of Chennai Corporation

Chennai, Mar 1 (UNI) DMK nominee M Subramanian, who laid down office as Chennai's Mayor following Madras High Court's split verdict on the reported violence during Corporation elections, was today re-elected to his post.

He was declared elected unopposed by Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhani in the absence of any other contender for the post.

After his swearing in, Mr Subramanian thanked Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and Local Administration Minister M K Stalin for nominating him for the Mayorship again.

In the council meeting, he moved a resolution thanking both Central and State governments for setting up a desalination plant near Minjur to meet the drinking water needs of Chennai city.

Later, talking to reporters, the Mayor said the work taken up by the Corporation during the last two months of his earlier tenure would be continued.

Mr Subramanian and 97 other Councillors tendered their resignation on the advice of Mr Karunanidhi after a two-member Bench of the High Court gave a fractured verdict on a batch of petitions, seeking re-election to the Corporation in view of alleged malpractices during polling.

Re-elections were held for 67 wards after 31 councillors belonging to the DMK-led DPA were elected unopposed.
