PM urged to give 'Do gaz zameen' to last Mughal Emperor
New Delhi, Mar 1 (UNI) The Human Rights Union of Supreme Court Lawyers wants remains of last Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar back from Yangon to fulfill his wish for ''do gaz zameen'' in his home country.
The lawyers have, in a letter to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, said there could be no better compliment to Bahadur Shah Zafar than giving his remains a place in India in the 150th year of the First War of Independence.
They quoted the poet emperor's immortal couplet to impress upon the Prime Minister the significance of their demand: ''Kitna Hai Badnaseeb Zafar Dafn Ke Liye, Do Gaz Zameen Bhi Na Mili Kooye Yar Mein.(How unfortunate is Zafar. He could not get even two yards of land to be buried in his own beloved country) .
The Union passed a unanimous resolution demanding that the remains of the Emperor along with his garments, jewelleries and utencils be brought back from Yangon, capital of the neighbouring Myanmar where the Emperor was exiled to after he lost to the English in the 1857 war.
A copy of the resolution has been sent to Minister for Culture Ambika Soni too.
