Let UP not go the Punjab way, CPI to Congress

New Delhi, Mar 1 (UNI) Taking note of the ''re-emergence of RSS'' in Punjab, the CPI today asked the Congress and Left parties to work together to develop a strong political front to prevent the BJP from staging a comeback in Uttar Pradesh and defeat the Mulayam Singh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party government.

''While we ask our friends in the Left to make serious introspection on why they faired badly in Punjab assembly elections, we also ask the Congress to take congnisance of its debacle in Punjab and Uttrakhand and draw proper lessons from it,'' CPI senior leader Gurudas Dasgupta told newspersons.

At a press conference, where CPI Deputy leader in the Lok Sabha C K Chandrappan and party chiefwhip S Sudharkar Reddy were also present, Mr Dasgupta said the Congress should also make seat adjustments with the Jan Morcha, led by former Prime Minsiter V P Singh, to effect consolidation.

The CPI leaders said they hoped the Congress would react favourably to thier appeal to ensure that the UP elections, being held next month, did not go the ''Punjab way''.

This is the first time that the BJP won as many as 19 seats in Punjab while it contested for 23 seats and the Left parties could not win even a single seat.
