CPI, RJD to support Ibobi, oath taking ceremony likely tomorrow

Imphal, Mar 1 (UNI) The Communist Party of India and the Rashtriya Janata Dal have formally announced their support to congress, Okram Ibobi Singh who has staked claim to form the next government in Manipur.

The Eighth Legislative Assembly was formally dissolved yesterday.

Mr Ibobi Singh, who was yesterday elected leader of the Congress Legislature Party, also called on Manipur Governor Dr S S Sidhu to formally claim majority. He was armed with the letter of support of the CPI and the RJD.

CPI's Steering Committee Secretary Dr M Nara today said the party has been a partner of the Congress since 2002 when the Secular Progressive Front government was formed and the Front still exists vogue. The CPI, which won four seats of the 24 contested, has also written a letter to the Governor mentioning its support to the leadership of O Ibobi. Ph Parijat was also elected as the leader of the CPI legislature wing.

RJD President W Nipamacha Singh also wrote a letter to the Governor to express support to O Ibobi Singh. The RJD won in three seats. Md Helaluddin, who defeated Speaker Maniruddin Sheikh, was also elected as the leader of the RJD legislature wing.

RJD General Secretary B Shanti said the support was unconditional. The Congress won in 30 seats and as the Chief Minister, won two seats, the exact number of MLAs is 29 and the support of the RJD and the CPI increase the total strength to 36 in the 60-member House.

Out of the ten Independent MLAs elected, some were also expected to support the government. The NCP, which won five seats, has not yet indicated its decision. The oath taking ceremony is expected to be held tomorrow.
