TN CM expresses concern over indiscriminate firings by SL Navy

Chennai, Feb 28 (UNI) In his second letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in as many days, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today expressed concern over the ''indiscriminate firings'' by Sri Lankan Navy on Tamil fishermen which caused ''a lot of tension'' in the coastal areas of the state.

''I will be thankful if urgent action is taken with a view to preventing such undesirable incidents,'' he said in the letter, a copy of which was circulated to the media here.

The Chief Minister had yesterday shot off a demi official letter to Dr Singh about the series of incidents causing distress to the fishermen in Tamil Nadu by the Lankan Navy.

In today's letter, he drew the Prime Minister's attention to another incident of firing by the Sri Lankan Navy on Tamil fishermen yesterday.

When four fishermen went into the sea in a country boat for fishing from Sangumal coast in Ramanathapuram district, the Lankan Navy resorted to firing in which one fisherman, Xavier (26), was injured.

He had been admitted to a Government hospital for treatment, Mr Karunanidhi said.
