Snow in Shimla: Widespread rain in HP

Shimla, Feb 28 (UNI) Shimla and its other adjoining areas today experienced another spell of fresh snowfall, taking the total snowfall recorded during the Winter season to about 121 cm, the Met office said.

The town received about 9.6 cm of fresh snowfall today, the third in the season, Shimla Meteorological Department Director Manmohan Sharma told UNI here.

He said the western disturbance laying over Jammu and Kashmir and other adjoining areas as an upper air cyclonic circulation, extending up to six km above mean sea level, was responsible for fresh spell of snow and rain in the state.

The weather is likely to open up by tomorrow afternoon or evening following the weakening of the disturbance, he said.

The met office said Shimla town had recorded over 9.6 cm of snowfall, followed by 30 cm at Kufri, 35 cm at Fagu, 11 cm at Mashobra and about 70 cm at Narkanda, besides 58.4 mm of rain up till 1730 hrs.

Patsieo, Udaipur and Dhundi recorded 153 cm, 125 cm and 120 cm of fresh snowfall, while Solang Nullah and Bhang Manali in Kulu district received 80 cm and 67 cm of fresh snow up till 0830 hrs, it said.

The met office said Kalpa recorded about 83.2 cm of fresh snowfall, followed by 60 cm at Sangla and 40 cm at Rekong Peo, while the famous tourist resort of Manali in Kullu district recorded over 60 cm of fresh snow up till 1420 hrs, disrupting traffic on the Shimla Narkanda road beyond Dhalli.

Shimla Deputy Commissioner Tarun Kapoor said snow cutters had been pressed into service to clear the snow off the roads and restore traffic on National Highway (NH) 22.
