New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) today welcomed the Union Budget 2007-08 terming it as growth-oriented and aiming at inclusive growth.

"It is a sharp-edged balancing exercise to speed up growth but could have given further relief to the corporate sector which is the engine of growth," newly-elected ICSI President Preeti Malhotra said in a statement.

On the positive side were the focus on agriculture, education and health in the budgetary proposals presented by the Finance Minister aimed at making the growth inclusive to achieve social justice.

She described the stress on soft infrastructure like skilled manpower, secondary and higher education sectors as "a welcome feature." ICSI Secretary and CEO N K Jain, in his reaction, noted that "the Budget gives desired impetus to grass root level, small and marginal farmers, unorganised sector, Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes and Small and Medium Enterprises to foster growth and social justice".

He lauded the proposals to retain the level of service tax, increase the threshold exemption and commitment to introduce national goods and services tax from April 2010.
