Dehra Dun, Feb 27 (UNI) Salvaging some respect for the Congress, which lost the Uttarakhand assembly election today, party candidate Vijay Bahuguna today won the Tehri-Garhwal parliamentary constituency seat defeating BJP's Manujendra Shah.

It proved third time lucky for Mr Bahuguna, a former Judge in the Maharashtra High Court and son of the redoubtable hill leader and former UP CM, the late Hemwati Nandan Bahaguna, who had contested from here unsuccessfully in the last two elections.

Talking to mediapersons after his victory was announced, Mr Bahuguna noted the area was the ''Karmbhoomi'' of his late father and he would strive to do his best to serve the people of the area.

BJP candidate Manujendra Shah, the son of incumbent MP and Maharaja of the erstwhile Tehri-Garhwal state Manavendra Shah, whose death on January 5 necessitated the bypoll, could not replicate his father's magic. The late Maharaja had won elections from the seat eight times consecutively.
