Shillong, Feb 26 (UNI) Meghalaya Chief Minister J D Rymbai tonight sought three days time from the AICC after being directed by the Congress high command to quit his post.

''I have sought two to three days time to decide on the party high command directive,'' Mr Rymbai told reporters after holding a closed-door meeting with the visiting AICC leaders - Oscar Fernandes and Maj (Retd) Ved Prakash -- here this evening.

Mr Fernandes and Maj (Retd), Prakash who arrived here this morning, conveyed the AICC's directive to Mr Rymbai to put in his papers.

''My (Congress) MLAs have requested me not to quit the office, as they wanted to discuss the matter thoroughly,'' the beleaguered Chief Minister stated.

Mr Rymbai said he might even go to New Delhi to find out the reasons for the order.

However, Mr Fernandes refused to comment when journalists repeatedly asked for the reason behind the AICC directive.

''We are in the half way mark. I will not comment on it now,'' Mr Fernandes said.

Earlier, Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee president Onward L Nongtdu claimed the AICC directive was in the backdrop of Mr Rymbai losing the secret ballot election to the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) in the state.

Last month, Mr Rymbai and his predecessor D D Lapang contested the election for the post of Chief Ministership.

Altogether 29 Congress MLAs in the 60-member House exercised their franchise.

Eds pick up suitably from earlier.
