K'taka Govt to launch new project to check rural migration

Bangalore, Feb 27 (UNI) The Karnataka Government will launch a new project, Town Municipality Councils Infrastructure Development Project, in July to check increased migration from rural areas.

State Urban Development Minister Shrinivas Alangur told reporters here today that the project, to be initially taken up in a taluk on a pilot basis, would lay focus on developing most backward districts.

Discussions on the issue had been held with the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister and he had urged them to sanction at least Rs 250 crore in the next budget for the project. A master plan was being readied for the implementation of the project, he said.

Mr Alangur said the project, to be taken up under the Centrally-sponsored scheme for the development of small and medium towns, aimed at providing drinking water, roads, drainage and housing, besides development of industries.

Elections to local self Government bodies were likely to be held in May, he said.
