Congress brings out booklet on Council Chairman's election fiasco
Bangalore, Feb 27 (UNI) Opposition Congress in Karnataka has brought out a booklet highlighting the 'unconstitutional acts' of the JD(S)-BJP government on the election of the Chairman of the Legislative Council.
Speaking to reporters here, party General Secretary Prakash Rathod, who released the booklet, demanded immediate election to the post which had fallen vacant since June last year. Otherwise the Governor, who had already pulled up the state government in the matter, should take appropriate steps as per the law, he said.
Congress spokesperson V S Ugrappa, who had drafted the booklet, said the government had failed to complete the election process as it did not have the majority in the Upper House. The ruling coalition has just 28 members compared to 48 from the opposition.
The incharge Chairman N Thippanna was acting in an extra constitutional manner, he alleged.
The delay in electing a new Chairman to the Legislative Council had resulted in Congress boycotting both the Houses leading to en masse suspension of the members in the Upper House. The Lower House too had witnessed unprecedented unruly incidents over the matter, forcing the Governor to intervene.
