Puri, Feb 26 (UNI) A widow living in Keutunga village under the Gop police station was allegedly beaten to death by her in-laws on Saturday night on the suspicion that she was suffering from the dreaded AIDS.

Police said Kalandi Behera of Keutunga married Sabita of Basantpur about twelve years ago. Kalandi went to Surat alone and was working there for some years. He returned to the village and died in 2003.

It was believed that Kalandi died of AIDS.

His neighbours suspected Sabita, the widow, also of carrying AIDS virus. Their only son was sent to his maternal uncle's house.

Meanwhile, deceased Sabita's father Dhaneswar Behera had lodged a complaint with the Gop police station, stating that his daughter was often tortured by her in-laws, who were after the property left by her husband.

He denied that Sabita was suffering from AIDS and alleged that she was killed on Saturday night by her in-laws.

Police had detained two brothers of late Kalandi for questioning, while post-mortem was conducted with utmost care at the district head quarter hospital here to ascertain the cause of death and whether the widow was suffering from AIDS, police said.
