Industry should not be at the cost of agriculture: Basu
Kolkata, Feb 26 (UNI) Industrialisation should not be done at the cost of agriculture even as industry is considered to be the main source of employment generation, West Bengal Agriculture Commission Chairman R N Basu said today.
Speaking to newsmen after meeting Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Mr Basu said since the state had very limited of agricultural land because of its high density of population, not more than two per cent of it should be earmarked for industry.
Even as the state was self sufficient in agricultural production, the farmers should have greater access to improved technology to boost the productivity, Mr Basu said.
He, however, refused to elaborate on the probable impact on the Indian market following the entry of major private agricultural entrepreneurs.
