Kolkata, Feb 24 (UNI) The Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) will organise a ''solidarity day'' on March one in support of the striking jute mill workers throughout the state.

Addressing a press conference here, SUCI state unit secretary Provash Ghosh said more than 2.5 lakhs jute mill workers were striking from January five demanding their dues of Rs 300 crores provident fund, gratuity of Rs 350 crores and Rs 150 crores of ESI, that have been allegedly forfeitted by the mill owners.

''The jute mill workers demands are genuine and lawful, but the UPA at the centre and the ruling Left Front government in the state were safeguarding the interest of the mill owners,'' he said.

He also said the party's several frontal organisations would organise citizen convention in the middle of March next to create pressure on the centre and the state government to meet the workers' demands.

Our movement would be continued for the lawful demands of the mill workers and if the centre and the state government failed to resolve the crisis, the party could call a strike in favour of the striking workers, Mr Ghosh hinted.
