DMK opposes Parliamentary debate on Cauvery award

New Delhi, Feb 24 (UNI) The DMK has opposed the move of Karnataka MPs to raise the final award of Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) on the ground that any parliamentary debate on a sensitive issue would 'vitiate' an otherwise congenial relationship between the Tamil and Kannada people.

In his letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, Leader of the DMK Parliamentary Party and Union Shipping Minister T R Baalu has said the CWDT had given its verdict on the issue and both the Karnataka and Tamil Nadu governments are approaching the judiciary for allaying apprehensions and seeking clarifications on the final award.

He said if such a debate is allowed in Lok Sabha, the MPs belonging to the DMK and other political parties of the Democratic Progressive Alliance group in Tamil Nadu should also be permitted to take part in the proceedings, Mr Baalu demanded.

Mr Baalu's letter follow's the moves of Karnataka MPs of BJP, Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) seeking a discussion under rule 193 of Parliamentary Procedures Act.
