4 Army personnel killed in avalanche

Gangtok, Feb 24 (UNI) Four army personnel were killed in an avalanche at Lachung, near here, Army sources said today.

According to a late report, the four jawans were on patrol when the accident occurred.

They were trying to manoevre their way in a snow bound area at a high altitude above a stream at Mukti near Lachung on Februry 19, army sources said .

The bodies of three jawans had been recovered, about 500 feet away from the accident site buried under snow, during a search conducted by the army and local people the next day. However, one of the body was yet to be traced.

Army sources said the deceased belonged to the Jat and Sikh regiments.

The bodies were sent to their respective homes in Rajasthan and Punjab.
