NTPC to go slow on Power equipment manufacturing company
Kolkata, Feb 23 (UNI) The National Thermal Power Corporation(NTPC), a PSU power generation company, is going slow on its new venture of power equipment and spares manufacturing and servicing power equipment.
Speaking on the sidelines of Asia Pacific conclave on Coal Combustion Products, NTPC Director (Operations) Chandan Roy said, ''We will float a subsidiary for this purpose before the Commonwealth Games scheduled in 2010 in Delhi.'' However, he declined to mention when the company would appoint a consultant for this project.
With this in view, the NTPC management was looking at the possibility of floating a subsidiary that would undertake manufacture of spare parts, equipment and components for the power plants. It was also looking at the possibility of undertaking maintenance and repair jobs through this subsidiary, NTPC sources said.
The Commonwealth Games scheduled to be held in New Delhi would soar demand for power, in addition to the normal increase in future requirment. To cater to this demand, many power generators were adding to their present capacity resulting in all power equipment manufacturers' and suppliers' reaching full capacity.
NTPC has already initiated a pilot project at its existing thermal power station at Rihand in Uttar Pradesh.
Here, the power generator has set up a maintenance workshop for its existing power units. Another similar project is likely to come up in some other locations, the official said. The decision to set up the subsidiary will hinge on the success of these pilot projects.
