Karnataka MPs seek discussion on Cauvery in Lok Sabha

New Delhi, Feb 23 (UNI) Members of Parliament from Karnataka today sought time with Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee to highlight the injustice meted out to Karnataka in the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal both in terms of irrigation and drinking water needs.

The MPs including former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda and former Union Minister Ananth Kumar and R L Jalappa held a meeting to finalise the wordings of the notice served under rule 193 of Parliamentary Procedures. After meeting the Speaker the MPs belonging to BJP, Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) also met Parliamentary Affairs Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi seeking his cooperation in allowing a detailed discussion to highlight the injustice meted out to the state by the final award. Over 20 MPs had signed the notice and more were expected to append their signatures, sources said.

This meeting follows yesterday's meeting convened by Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy to apprise them of the nuances of the 1000 page order. The MPs were also given a power point presentatation about the order and its impact in terms of irrigation, drinking water needs and the legal aspects. An all party meeting is being convened by Chief Minister at Bangalore tomorrow where the government will take a stand after taking these party leaders into confidence.
