Dance recital by Vyajayantimala enthralls on Muskaan Silver Jubilee

New Delhi, Feb 23 (UNI) It was a memorable evening for the intellectually challenged students of Muskaan as they were treated to an enthralling display of classical dance this evening by none other than yesteryear's actor and famous Bharatnatyam dancer Vyjayantimala Bali.

On the occasion of the Silver Jubilee of Muskaan, the association of children with a mental handicap, Ms Vyjayantimala Bali regaled the audience of intellectuals and the students of Muskaan, gathered at the Kamani auditorium in the capital, with an engaging classical dance recital, thus bringing back memories of the days of yore.

The function, where noted writer and columnist Kuldip Nayar was the chief guest, also saw the students of Muskaan present a play 'Hum Aur Voh Log', which portrayed the struggles and trumoil undergone by them in their day-to-day life as well.

Speaking on the occasion, the president of Muskaan Shanti Auluck said the aim of organising the function was to spread awareness about the capabilities of intellectually challenged persons besides emphasising the importance of education and training in their development.

''One of the reasons for their impoverished living is the attitude of the larger society towards them. Majority of people with intellectual disability, estimated to be three per cent of the population, are living a life of neglect by our society.

''However, our experience at Muskaan has proved that appropriate schooling, vocational training and work opportunities greatly helps in overcoming limitations and becoming self-reliant and productive, thus enabling them to live a life of self respect and dignity,''Dr Auluck said.

In fact, a team of Muskaan students and teachers have been going around to various schools and colleges to discuss these issues along with an audio visual presentation.
