Kochi, Feb 23 (UNI) Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Sureesh Mehta today inaugurated the 'Chatak Memorial' at the naval base here.

Addressing the gathering, Admiral Mehta lauded the efforts of the Southern Naval Command to institute a memorial for the warship 'INS Chatak'. He expressed his hope that the memorial would be a source of inspiration for the young officers and sailors, and it would help civilians know more about the Navy and its history.

The Navy acquired INS Chatak, an OSA class missile boat, from the erstwhile Soviet Union and it was commisioned into the 25th Missile Vessel Squadron at Kolkata in 1977.

The warship was decommissioned in 2003 after glorious service of 26 years, including 13 years on the western coast spearheading the 25th Killer Squadron and later on with the Local Flotilla in Vishakapatnam.

In recognition of its role and performance, his worship was awarded the 'Unit Citation in 2000'.
