20 lakh job opportunities from khadi sector in 3 yrs

Hyderabad, Feb 23 (UNI) Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) chairperson Kumud Joshi today said the sector can provide 20 lakh new employment opportunities in the next three years if resources of various ministries and departments were pooled.

Addressing the national workshop on 'Convergence for Rural Upliftment', inaugurated by Andhra Pradesh Governor Rameshwar Thakur at Raj Bhavan here, she said with such a measure KVIC would volunteer to provide a platform for tranferring various benefits to rural people for better livelihood.

She said the KVIC was implementing various programmes and schemes for development of khadi and village industries in rural areas through certified khadi institutions, NGOs, individuals and state Khadi and Village Industry Boards.

During the last 50 years, KVIC had provided employment to over 82.77 lakh people and is producing goods worth Rs 12,383 crore.

In the global scenario, convergence was the new 'mantra' of today's development activities and KVIC was willing to play a pivotal role in this direction as a catalyst through its vast network of NGOs spread throughout the country.

KVIC Chief Executive Officer C Chandran also attended the function.
