Tension prevails following clash between police, advocates

Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, Feb 21 (UNI) Tension prevailed for more than two hours at Chengam town, near here today, following a clash between police and a group of local advocates in the police station.

Police said, one Murugan a local advocate went to Chengam police station in connection with a bail matter and a wordy duel occurred between Ms Tamilarasi the women Sub inspector and the advocate. It was alleged that the advocate broken a chair. Following this, other policemen overpowered the advocate, hand-cuffed him, before beating up severely.

On hearing the information, advocates from Chengam and Tiruvannamalai went to the police station and went on a rampage by damaging the furnitures and other properties of the police station, it was alleged.

Later the advocates resorted to a road roko agitation, demanding action against the erring police personnel. Around that time, Sathya Pratha Sahu, Tiruvannamalai District Collector, who was passing through that area was detained by the agitated advocates for more than 40 minutes.

Meanwhile, top police officials rushed to the spot, persuaded the advocates and restored normalcy. The peace meeting was in progress under the District and Sessions Judge Chandrasekaran, police added.
