Tata Steel bags national safety awards for mines

Jamshedpur, Feb 20 (UNI) Two Tata steel mines have bagged national safety awards for mines for its achievement to become the longest accident free mines in the country, company sources here said.

The Centre had conferred the awards to Bheltand mine for being the longest accident free mine for the year 2003 while the Jamadoba mine was adjudged the runners up for the same reason for the year 2002.

The awards were seen as an expamplary recognitions by the government on the back ground of booming mining industry, where accidents, mishaps and injuries are on the cards, the sources said.

Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat gave away the awards to the respective representatives of both the mines at a function in New Delhi on February 14.

Union minister for labour and employment Oscar Fernandes was also present on the occasion, the sources added.
