Jammu, Feb 21 (UNI) To fight militancy in the state, recruitment of police personnel for four battalions in Jammu and Kashmir is in progress, official sources revealed here today.

Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, while addressing Pradesh Congress Committee executive of Jammu province last evening disclosed that the union government has accepted the proposal of creating 15 battalions of state police to tackle internal security, sources said.

The government, in a written statement to the State Legislative Council during budget session, had also said though the state police is well equipped but at present it is not in position to fight against the militancy without the help of Army and para-military forces.

Despite opposition of People's Democratic Party (PDP) who is strong votary of army withdrawal in the state, the government had been justifying the deployment of troops of para-military forces and Army in the state to fight against proxy war imposed by Pakistan.

The Minister for state for Home affairs Taj Moin-ud-din had also stated in the upper house that state police is good enough to deal with law and order situation but not militancy.

The state government had sought Central assistance to raise strength of its state police up to at least 15 more Battalions to fully takeover anti-terror operations in the event of army withdrawal from the militancy-infested Kashmir.
