PDP has no intention to withdraw support from J

New Delhi, Feb 21 (UNI) The People Democratic Party (PDP), the ruling coalition partner in Jammu and Kashmir, today said it has no intention to pull out of the Congress-led government the state.

''The reports in a section of media that the PDP will pull out of the government are untrue and unfounded. We have no such intention,'' senior PDP leader and former Jammu and Kashmir leader Ghulam Hassan Mir told UNI.

However, he said the party had sought an emergency meeting of the state cabinet to discuss the withdrawal of the Army in phases from the state.

Mr Mir reiterated that the PDP was not interested to ''belittle'' the Chief Minister's institution but said certain issues need to be addressed in view of the improving relations between India and Pakistan.

Demanding suspension of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from the state, he said it is being ''grossly misused by some people''.

''The glaring example of the misuse of AFSPA is the recent cases of fake encounters in the state,'' he added.

About the withdrawal of the Army, Mr Mir pointed out that it was not possible to complete the exercise at once.

''Immediate steps are required to plan the phased withdrawal of the troops....,'' he added.

He said Congress President Sonia Gandhi is aware of the matter.

''I am confident and hopeful that the Congress would take measures in this regard because it is the need of the hour,'' he added.

A section of media today reported that since Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad had failed to give an assurance to the PDP on its demand of reduction of security forces and withdrawal of AFSPA from the state, the ruling coalition partner will withdraw from the alliance.
